Dr. Lucas Joppa joined Haveli Investments, a technology-focused private equity firm, just recently in 2022, with the mission to help build a company that has sustainability at the center of everything that it does – from net zero operations to investments in sustainability software solutions. Prior to Haveli, Dr. Joppa was Microsoft’s first Chief Environmental Officer where he presided over planetary-scale responsibilities – including Microsoft’s pledge in 2020 that by 2030 they would be carbon negative and by 2050 would have removed from the atmosphere all the carbon dioxide Microsoft had emitted since its inception in 1975. Dr. Joppa was also one of the chief architects in Microsoft’s $1 billion Climate Innovation Fund, which invests in technologies that help control the global climate, and of Microsoft’s Planetary Computer, a new computing platform for better monitoring, modeling, and managing Earth’s natural systems. Dr. Joppa has also held the roles of chief environmental scientist and computational ecologist at Microsoft and has been recognized as one of the world’s most highly cited researchers. Dr. Joppa holds a Ph.D. in Ecology from Duke University and has been recognized by Fortune’s “40 Under 40” list.
