Prof. Adam Klivans will share the research vision for the new NSF AI Institute for Foundations of Machine Learning (IFML) as well as some of its educational and outreach components. He will discuss how algorithms will play a major role and give examples from recent work.
Dr. Adam Klivans is a professor of computer science at UT-Austin. He is director of the new NSF AI Institute for Foundations of Machine Learning (IFML) and director of the UT-Austin Machine Learning Lab (MLL). Prof. Klivans also serves on the editorial board for the Theory of Computing and Machine Learning Journal. His research interests are in provably efficient algorithms for core tasks in machine learning. He has won numerous awards such as the Microsoft Azure Data Science Initiative Award, NSF Career Award, and College of Natural Sciences Teaching Excellence Award.
As the director of the first NSF AI Institute for Foundations of Machine Learning and of the Machine Learning Laboratory, Prof. Klivans has been leading the effort to advance the foundations of machine learning, i.e., to develop entirely new classes of algorithms that will lead to more sophisticated and beneficial AI technologies. Facebook, Netflix, YouTube, Dell Technologies, and the city of Austin have signed on to transfer this research into practice.
The institute will also pursue the creation of an online master’s degree in AI, along with undergraduate research programming and online AI courses for high schoolers and working professionals.
